Widows

Losing someone can be a tough situation for anyone and if losing them wasn’t enough you have other things that come up as well. The biggest of those would be unfinished business and while in most cases that would be past debts, what would you do if that debt had to be payed to someone not asking, but telling you that you had to pay? That’s the situation four woman are faces with in Steve McQueen’s latest Widows and it’s the choice they make that sets this one apart.

For Veronica (Viola Davis ) her relationship with her husband Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson) is everything. So when Harry is killed along with his crew during a heist, Veronica and the other wives are put into some major binds. The biggest one being who Harry was stealing the money for and that person is giving Veronica a week to get it together for him to collect. Not having that money she is given a tip on where Harry’s notebook is at and it contains the next planned job down to every last detail. Not seeing any other way Veronica approaches the other wives who lost their husbands with the proposition do the job themselves. Those women are Linda (Michelle Rodriguez), who lost her dress shop, Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) who has no idea what to do next, and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) who is fills in as the driver. The plan is pretty sound and the take would be more than enough to pay the debt, but like all plans there is always a snag. This one comes in the form of an election between Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell) a third generation politician and Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry) a gangster turned wannabe politician. All the parts are in play, it’s just up to the woman to pull off the dangerous heist they all need to survive.

A good heist film can be a beauty when is pulled off right and this one is candy for your soul. Based on the book from Lynda la Plante of the same name and written for the screen by Gillian Flynn and Steve McQueen, this has been called a female version of Heat, but this is truly its own thing. McQueen and Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt create an absolute gorgeous yet gritty world that is a marvel to behold. While the world could be its own character, the people that fill it up make the film complete in every way possible. Leading the way is Davis who gives another strong performance, but make no mistake about it everyone brings their “A” game to this one. There is not a bad one is this lot and when you mix it with the story and direction you have as good as movie you will see in any year. When Widows fires on all cylinders, you need to do is hold on tight for the ride with white knuckles and all. It will be hard to not include this on my best of list this year, because movies don’t get much better than this right here.
