Avengers: Endgame

So it really does all come down to this, as Dr. Strange uttered near the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we are indeed in the endgame now. Avengers: Endgame pretty much begins where the last film ended, in the most direct way, this is the first true Marvel sequel as our heroes are dealing with the aftermath of the Thanos snap. They are battered, angry, but most of all, broken.

This is exactly what I was hoping for after Thanos won and wiped out half of the universe, we get to see our heroes dwell in sorrow and devoid of the knowledge that there will be a Spider-Man: Far From Home and a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.  The writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely along with directors Joe and Anthony Russo do the smart thing by keeping us focused on this losing scenario and utilizing that time to have the remaining Avengers reflect on what they just lost, as well as what they have lost in their lives over the subsequent 10 years since the birth of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And it works…mostly. Along with the downtime, there is a plot device that was clever in inception and super entertaining in execution, but I have to admit I was a bit lost on the logistics of it all. Not that that’s what the filmmakers were going for, they truly aim for the heart on this one, but I was a little busy trying to fit all the pieces together while they were taking their victory lap. Maybe a second viewing will put the movie brain part of me in the back seat, but this initial viewing was a bit much to take in as they wrap up this decade of films before we get to a new Phase that will most likely include the newly acquired Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

Unlike what’s been happening on the Star Wars side of the Disney pool, where they are continuously killing off our heroes and saying thanks for the decades of money but these movies are not for you anymore, we’re going after your kids now. It’s incredible on a number of levels that Marvel is saying thanks for sitting through 21 of our movies, here is a 3-hour reward before we move on to other things, but if you decide to stick with us, we’ll still have something for you too.

As the tears are shed and the emotions are spent, I have to say that what has been acomplished here is simply unprecedented and I honestly feel we will never see anything like this ever again. It is truly something to behold, it is a true MARVEL.
