They Came Together

Let’s face it love and relationships are hard. With all the difficulties that are already involved, sometimes movies and songs can add to a list of expectations that may or may not be possible. When it comes to romantic comedies, or how they are called now “Rom Coms” their stories pretty much color between the lines and stick with one of several formula’s that work. Things like guy meets girl, guy and girl fall in love, problems arise and you think it is all over, and they get back together and live happily ever after. Sound familiar? I just described the story of eighty five percent of all romantic comedies in one sentence.

Well there may or may not be an old saying “If you can’t beat them, then make fun of them.” or something like that, and that is exactly what “They Came Together” does. Joel (Paul Rudd) works for a giant company that builds candy superstores.  He is in a relationship with Tiffany (Cobie Smulders), a perfect relationship; at least that is what Joel thinks. That vision comes crashing down when Joel walks in on Tiffany and another man. Joel eventually gets talked into going to a party where he can meet the perfect girl who is also single named Molly (Amy Poehler), who also is in the candy business. After hate at first sight, Joel and Molly eventually fall in love and in the process pull out every cliché in the book in doing so.

Now most times when you pull out every trick in the book it can be death to originally, unless you are doing it all for satire. And with the talents behind the classic “White Hot American Summer”, you don’t get the ridiculous “Scary Moive” version of comedy, it’s more of a mix of subtle and not so subtle clever humor. One thing that could go wrong is you think that this is like that classic comedy, but it is not, and it doesn’t quite reach the peak that is “White Hot American Summer”. What you get here is a funny movie, that is not playing for over-the-top laughs, but instead mixes stories from popular rom coms in a blender and produce a smoothie that goes down, well, smooth. Written by Michael Showalter and David Wain (Role Models), and Wain also pulls double duty and directs the film as well. A good film though wouldn’t be complete if it wasn’t for a comedy all-star cast lead by Rudd and Poehler. With a who’s who of the comedy world making cameos.  There are plenty of laughs, this is one of those movies a guy could convince his significant other to watch, with the promise of a love story, only when it is all over you both will have the last laugh. We all need a little love and laughter in our life, so why not get a good daily dose, with this little film.
